National Certificate in Adult Education and Training (Level 4) Course Outline

The National Certificate in Adult Education and Training (Level 4) is a qualification for people delivering adult education and training and assessing adult learners. This qualification has been designed for people with diverse backgrounds and experience who are seeking a qualification in the adult education and training field.

Although there are no pre-requisites to entry to the course candidates must have access to adult learners. It is essential that candidates are active in the field as assignments are based on actual workplace performance. This qualification may stand alone or lead on to the National Certificate in Adult Education and Training (Level 5) which consists of a further 20 credits, making 60 credits in all.

Detailed Course Requirements

The only compulsory standard in the qualification is 7091, Establish a culturally safe and inclusive learning environment for adults in New Zealand's cultural setting (Level 4, Credits 4). A minimum of a further 36 credits are required at level 4 or above. Typically candidates may choose 4 out of the 5 workshops listed below. The choice will be based on individual training needs and can be varied or mixed and matched according to candidate requirements. The workshops are delivered over 2 days at approximately 6 week intervals.

Candidates may enrol onto the full qualification or are able to enrol in individual units, or groups of units if they wish to gain skills in specific areas e.g. assessment, instructional design, or training delivery. WORKSHOP 1

Outline

Workshop one is based on unit standards 7091, Establish a culturally safe and inclusive learning environment for adults in New Zealand's cultural setting (compulsory), 7115 Create and maintain a positive learning environment for adult learners, and 19444, Deliver group training sessions to adults.

This workshop will enable you to:

• Identify diverse cultural needs of learners;
• Establish and maintain a positive, culturally safe, and inclusive learning environment;
• Prepare group training sessions and presentations to adults;
• Deliver training sessions that cater for different learning styles; and
• Evaluate and review training sessions.

WORKSHOP 2

Outline

Workshop two is based on 4098, Use standards to assess candidate performance, and 11281, Prepare candidate(s) for assessment against standards.
Unit standard 4098, is the key competency based assessment standard that is part of the National Certificate in Adult Education and Training (Level 4) qualification. It is often the standard that Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) require as a condition of registration of Workplace Assessors. It is also the minimum standard often recommended by NZQA auditors for assessors within PTEs. On completion of this two-day programme participants will leave with an understanding of NZQA's National Qualifications Framework (NQF), will have experienced and practiced competency-based assessment, learned how to use assessment guides for standards based assessment, and how to plan and prepare for assessment against Units 4098 and 11281 using a ‘collection of evidence' approach.

The course will enable you to:

• Determine a candidate's readiness for assessment;
• Prepare a candidate for assessment;
• Conduct assessment; and
• Complete assessment administration.

WORKSHOP 3

Outline

Workshop three is based on 7103, Determine adult training requirements of individuals, and 7093, Design learning sessions for adult education and training.

The course will enable you to:

• Carry out a training needs analysis; and
• Design well structured training sessions based on the identified training needs.

WORKSHOP 4

Outline

Workshop four is based on 7097, Facilitate interactive learning sessions for adults and 7114, Coach adult learner(s). The course will enable you to:

• Prepare, facilitate and review interactive learning sessions; and
• Prepare, deliver, and review coaching sessions for adult learner(s).

Both of these standards are at level 5 and can count credit towards the level 5 national certificate.

WORKSHOP 5

Outline

Workshop five is based on unit standards 11551, Moderate assessment, and 11552, Design assessment.
This workshop is suitable for experienced assessors that need to develop the skills to design and moderate assessment material. Participants in this workshop are likely to have a role in moderating assessments that have been designed and carried out by other people within an organisation. It is highly recommended that people hold unit standard 4098 prior to enrolling onto this course.

The workshop will enable you to:

• Design quality assessment tasks;
• Moderate assessment materials;
• Verify assessment decisions; and
• Follow the moderation administration practices of your organisation and external standard setting bodies.

For candidates that enrol into the full training pathway that leads to the National Certificate in Adult Education and Training (level 4) the full course fee of $ 550.00 plus GST applies. This entitles candidates to attend up to 4 of the 5 workshops. Please note that workshop one covers the only compulsory unit standard (7091) in the qualification.
